ILOVermont

I had to run the back roads to get to Quechee Village and this is what I saw...our sweet bridge has definitely seen better days.  But what I didn't capture was the village coming together to clean the mess up!

Hurricane Irene.  Damn you.  Damn you for flooding our state, ripping apart our historic covered bridges, creating untold homelessness and decimating our local businesses.  Not cool, lady.

Within HOURS of Irene's exit, the ferociously bad assed Green Mountain locals were cleaning and repairing the damage. While our state digs itself out from under inches of silt and water, there are many more who have nothing to save, their houses and lives have been swept away entirely.  For them, there are organizations like The Vermont Food Bank and Vermont Red Cross who provide food and shelter for those most in need.  You can text FOODNOW to 52000 and Vermont Food Bank will turn your $10 donation to $60 in food for those in need.

Thank you for all your lovely prayers and good wishes.  We can feel the love!

damn right! I brought some macarons to the crews in bethel yesterday!!! If law school didn't start tomorrow I'd spend another day baking, but alas, the crews on this side of Woostock/Quechee will have to wait till this weekend!!!

My sister's inlaws live in that area. She loves that bridge, and was sad that it got washed away.

I saw images on the news of the covered bridges washing away and I could scarce keep myself from crying. But Vermont and the New England will prevail. They're a tough bunch. If they can handle nor-easters, those little biting flies and ice storms, they can handle anything.

Thats quite a photo, Gesine. I hope no one was hurt when it washed out.
Is your home ok?
There's so much damage, it's mind boggling.

Glad you are ok...my friend's vacation home in Stockbridge, VT washed away. They live here in NJ and are devastated. Her husband had an orchid business and was a master landscaper. Right where 2 rivers came together. Covered bridges are so darling....we all must cherish each day. The jersey shore (ocean city) faired pretty well...but it's early for hurricane season...cheers to you and your sis! Jennifer

I read your book a few weeks ago, and loved it. But I have been taunted by the plum tart, no I am not going to attempt the German spelling. I was finally able to make it today and I shared it with a group of ladies that ABSOLUTELY LOVED it. We savored every morsel. I thought about you. Thank you for sharing your recipe in the book. I hope all is well for you in Vermont. Stay safe, and bake on!

While she could have been a worse B I'm so glad she wasn't. I saw one on the news last night totally fall in and go. I love those old covered bridges and was sad to see it disintegrate.

Thank you! We miss you and your shop up here. You should give us your lemon cheesecake recipe to dull the sting of the damage!

So sorry to see such beauty and craftsmanship wrecked. I never would have expected your damage would be so bad but hope that pleas like yours will be met with donations to help those affected.
