Confections of a Closet Master Baker. That's the title of my book. Confections instead of confessions because that's what I do. Closet because my baking life is aspirational and at one point it was indeed a bit of a secret. And Master Baker because who wants to just be a baker? And it sounds naughty when you say it out loud. Kind of like pianist but probably worse.
But the title is going to change when the book comes out on paperback in June. At first I was disappointed that my publisher wanted something new; I was so chummy with what I'd come up with originally. But after a while, I warmed to the idea. I came up with a new title and now that I think about it, it probably conveys the nature of my story better. So look out for the paperback in June.

I just finished your book last week and thoroughly enjoyed it...so much so, I read it again. I can't wait to try some of the recipes you shared. I really like the pieces about your childhood, especially your Omi. She sounds like she was a lot like my Grandma. They both needed Don't mess with Grandma tshirts!.
I am curious - Did Helga ever come forth with an egg?
I love master baking though. ;)
oh I want this book. I bought your first now I m surely buying this one. I want the hard cover though :)
added this book to my queue at the library!
so happy I have me the hardcover w/ the naughty title, uh huh!
I liked the original title but always thought it was a mouthful!
I seriously doubt they will come up with a more clever title and will pick up the original before it's too late..
I so loved this book in hardback that it was the first book I put on my new Kindle as well. I put in on my Kindle just in case I might need to read it all over again whilst away from home. So tickled it is coming out in paperback soon.
Congratulations on your new debut. Does that make you a debutante?
Loved the hard back title, bought it right when it came out, don't think your publisher is on target. And I buy a lot of books.
My hardcover is under police protection to have you sign one day when I drive up and buy goodies in person. Congratulations... I love the cover and title! xoxo
Personally, I like the original title. It is what drew my attention to the book on the shelves of the book store. But you do have to go with the flow when it comes to publishing. Good luck with the paperback but I love my Hardback.
I'll wager the new title is intended to delude potential buyers into thinking it's a typical Lifetime movie-type tale of a divorced mother finding a fulfilling career and Mr. Really Right. The lollipop color scheme used on the new cover is typical of that genre, too. The original title and cover are far superior.
I just ordered your book this morning. I can't wait to read it. Glad I got the hardcover with the 'naughty' title.
...and I thought this was your SECOND book!, before I read on. I'm glad I have the original. I really enjoyed the book.
not sure I see the logic...disappointed that this new title isn't your second book...or maybe you're teasing :-)
I can't wait to read it! So excited!! I always tell people about your bakery!! :)
Regardless of the new title, the content is the same, right?
That's the most important aspect for me, at least.
Gesine, you're in the pages and we get the chance to hear your story and relate to you in a way that resonates deeply.
It doesn't matter that your sister is famous, what does matter is that you found your truth and your passion.
(and i'm right with you. baking is soul satisfying)
As a cookbook author myself, I understand the challenges presented w/publishers.
(the title of my book and certain additions within still keep me up at night)
It's all groovy.
(my cookbook is pretzels, btw. if you want one, lemmeno)
Is this available outside the US?
Looking for it here in Australia.
I like the original title, but the main thing is all the wonderful parts inside of the book!
And I too hope Miss Helga has started laying eggs now
Happy Monday!
I finally got my copy today (hardcover), and read it in about three hours. I was crying by page 30, and laughing all the way. Thank you for sharing your experience and your gorgeous recipes! Much love from Dayton, Ohio.
Long ago, two or three careers ago I went to cooking school. Not much is left from that life, just a closet food snob. Yesterday I read the recipe for Savory Rock Scones. Big build up in the recipe intro. Skim, skim, skim...cayenne, yeah so what...tasso ham, Gruyere cheese...I actually went "ooooh!" in my head! Only someone who loves baking can put up with the life and stick with it. Thanks for sharing your story.
When I first saw the photo of the book I was soooo excited, I thought you gad a new book out!!! read your book two weeks ago...LOVED IT! thank you, I will buy the paper back also.
BTW I called my (Omi) Oma is that the same? I was born in Germany but my parents moved to the States when I was 1 year old.
I think they made a mistake to change the title. "Confections..." worked for me and was original.
